How to read a feedback report without demoralising your child

A marked script is a list of mistakes. Getting value out of it without turning it into an argument at the kitchen table is a skill for parents, not students.

For parents · 22 May 2026 · 5 min read

Every returned script is, structurally, a document about what went wrong. Handed over badly it reads as a verdict. Handed over well it reads as a plan. The difference is almost entirely in the first sixty seconds.

Start with the topic breakdown, not the mark

The overall mark tells you almost nothing you did not already know. The topic percentages tell you where a fortnight of work would move the grade. Open the report at that page.

Three actions, not thirty

Our reports end with three prioritised actions for exactly this reason. Ignore the rest of the annotations on the first read. Come back to them when the student is working on that specific topic.
